SENIORS FOR CLIMATE – A Day of Action across Canada – Oct 1st 2024

Updated: Apr 24

WHO WE ARE

We’re seniors deeply alarmed by the climate emergency. We make up over 25 per cent of Canada’s population and can have political, economic and social influence. Our Seniors for Climate goal is to build a nationwide community that will work well together to create a liveable future. We can play a major role. We have motive, commitment and opportunity. Along with and for our children and grandchildren, we will press for and work to achieve the right changes in policy and the behaviour of government and industry to reach sustainable ways forward to overcome the impacts of climate change.

OUR SENIORS ACTION PLAN October 1st is International Day of Older Persons and Canada’s National Seniors Day. On this day, we will hold events across Canada with actions in local communities and at legislative centres to set out our urgent demands and ways to counter climate change impacts. We will identify ways to guarantee healthy environments for future generations that work, are cost-effective and can be applied or scaled up NOW!

In early 2024, we started an ambitious outreach to seniors across Canada both to individuals and to those within hundreds of NGOs, associations, and groups. We will host webinarsi and zoom-type meetings and use communications platforms [website and social media] to assist everyone participating and supporting these 1 Oct 2024 events. We will share illustrative and useful toolkits and support tools to help you identify community Climate issues relevant in your locale and how your actions can make a difference.

OUR MAIN MESSAGES

· Climate change is here. Enough of studies, plans & misinformation. Join us in these actions, NOW!

· PHASE OUT fossil fuels-Cap emissions, limit extraction, reduce use in homes, buildings, industries.

· STOP the money pipelines funding Fossil Fuel [Govts, Banks, Credit Cards, Pensions, Financial Cos].

· STOP the devastating changes to our Mental & Physical Health occurring from Climate Change impacts [extreme heat, wildfires, storms, floods, droughts, air pollution]. Save our wellbeing, NOW!

· SPEED UP TRANSITION to proven, affordable, renewable & clean energy. Show how, NOW!

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Your event actions can be public meetings, gatherings, demonstrations, marches, press conferences, petitions, meetings with elected officials and more. You can choose what best fits in your locale and the climate issues and adaptations you want promoted, expanded and more widely implemented, NOW!

HOW WE CAN HELP AS SENIORS FOR CLIMATE

Toolkits, supporting the event and aligned tools examples will be provided, if needed. There will be menus of options for event actions and appropriate tools that offer ways to design and plan your event activities, as needed. We want unity showing among Seniors on 1 Oct 2024 with climate actions across Canada that include a common set of Signs and Posters you can print headlining ‘Seniors for Climate’ subtitled to fit your location and any specific climate issues that need fixing in your locale, NOW!

In addition, we will help, as needed, define your next steps and identify local resources you can use so your local Climate Event has impact and achieves useful outcomes to track their progress. Ideally, these will be local issues and adaptations that can be carried forward, scaled up or extended across your community and possible the region. This will build solid examples to document and share and potentially replicate right across Canada. We can all act together, applying our minds and resources, to do this NOW!

Acting together, Seniors can help us all achieve impact and influence critically needed changes. We look forward to you and your supporters participating with Seniors For Climate on Oct 1, 2024!
